Samaras the leader of New Democracy

Antonis Samaras took over yesterday as the leader of New Democracy from Costas Karamanlis after scoring a clear victory in Sunday’s election, which is seen as a clear mandate for the former finance, foreign and culture minister to begin reshaping the conservative party.

With almost all of the votes counted by last night, Samaras had taken 50.31 percent of the vote, compared to 39.34 for his main rival Dora Bakoyannis and 10.34 for Thessaloniki Prefect Panayiotis Psomiadis.

Samaras’s victory was made even more significant by the unexpectedly high turnout. Almost 750,000 ND members cast their ballots on Sunday, despite a series of technical problems.


Το νέο πρόεδρο της Νέας Δημοκρατίας Αντώνη Σαμαρά, επισκέφτηκε χθες στο γραφείο του ο πρωθυπουργός της Ελλάδας Γιώργος Παπανδρέου, προκειμένου να τον συγχαρεί για την εκλογή του. Οι δύο άντρες ηλικίας 57 και 58 ετών αντίστοιχα, σπούδασαν μαζί στο Amherst College της Μασαχουσέτης τη δεκαετία του 1970.

Ο Αντώνης Σαμαράς πήρε χθες την ηγεσία της Νέας Δημοκρατίας από τον Κωνσταντίνο Καραμανλή, έπειτα από μια καθαρή νίκη, στις εκλογές που πραγματοποιήθηκαν για την ανάδειξη του νέου προέδρου του κόμματος.

Με ποσοστό 50,31 τοις εκατό, σε αντίθεση με την Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη που απέσπασε το 39,34 τοις εκατό και τον Παναγιώτη Ψωμιάδη που συγκέντρωσε το 10,34 τοις εκατό.
